SENIOR MEMBER TRAINING 2008From the Saturday 23rd to Sunday 29th March 2008 Warwickshire Clubs for Young People delivered its annual Senior Member Training Course. The course is intended for older club members, from affiliated clubs age between 16 & 19 years who intend to become assistant leaders within their respective clubs. The course itself is a week long residential visit to an Outward Bound Centre (the first of its kind) at Aberdovey in Wales. This year's group was made up of Young People from the Bradby Club in Rugby, Dosthill Boys' Club in Tamworth, Willenhall YMCA in Coventry and Willenhall Amateur Boxing Club also in Coventry. During the week the young people took part in a 6KM canoe trip down the Dovey Estuary, a day's climbing and scrambling, high and low ropes courses, abseiling and a two day overnight expedition sleeping in a Log Cabin deep in the Welsh hills. Below are some comments made by young peoples about the week's activities. About canoeing: “I enjoyed making the boat to go fast on the water” “Making it to the end in one piece felt like a big achievement” About climbing & scrambling: “I felt safe” “I was proud when I made it to the top and overcame my fear of heights” “I had a good time with my mates” About high & low ropes: “I managed to reach my personal goal on the Jacobs ladder” “I pushed myself out of my comfort today” About the Expedition: “I enjoyed spending the night in the log cabin” “I pushed my self on the walk back to the centre” “I enjoyed it despite the rain” All the young people involved in the residential had a fantastic experience with the weather staying on our side for most of the week. All the young people who completed the week developed in confidence, learnt new skills, made new friends and most importantly had fun! 31/03/2008
